We know that there were m,any various gods and goddesses. We also know that the gods had certain things that only men were allowed to do. So doesn’t it seem very strange that the Greeks would have the main figure of war be a women and that the god of the hunt is actually a woman? Does anyone else agree that the Greeks might have contradicted themselves with how they say war and hunting are for men only yet their main gods for these are women?

Greek Contradictory
Posted in Uncategorized
This is true, and I agree with what you are saying. Women are supposed to symbolize beauty and grace, and war is anything but that. As we have discussed in class, the gods all have very different personalities and opinions, and do not function as one unit. I think by having women as gods it provides mortal women with a little bit more respect.

I agree that men would usually symbolize things like war and hunting and it does seem like a contradiction. By women being the figure of something they would only have men be, it shows more of an importance for woman

Yea that is pretty stange after all the rules that were made up for that society was based on that men were better. I guess since the gods are supposed to be more powerful they took on roles that men would do because they had the capability to do so.

It is interesting that women are goddesses of war. I also find it interesting the comparison between Athena and Ares. Athena is more strategical and not quick to fight, unlike Ares who is much quicker to fight. It is definitely a contradiction in many ways.

I think that the Greeks did sort of contradict themselves. They believed that men were better than women, basically. However, some of the characteristics of goddesses of things like war are more feminist, so maybe the greeks thought it was ok. Like how Athena, the goddess of war, is more brains, not only strength like Ares. And Artemis, goddess of the hunt, is more graceful and hunts that way, not in the way men do. But yes, i do think they contradict themselves.
